that the suspect was indeed an army veteran and may have been a white supremacist. we have people from the temple who were yesterday telling us that this man wearing a t-shirt and dark pants just showed up in the parking lot shooting, killing someone outside before going inside the temple and killing others in there. but at this point and including what we're hearing yesterday from investigators here at the scene, that there was no actual motivation that they've been able to determine specifically in this case so far. witnesses at the scene through an interpreter who talked to cnn were saying that the gunman did not appear to say anything as he was in there, and police arriving at the scene exchanging fire with him, killing him. also one officer at the time being wounded as well. at this point the answers about why this kind of violence, why here and why now have yet to be answered. >> david, there was a huge amount of police activity overnight that a residence that was allegedly this suspect's

home. any sense that they've uncovered anything there? >> reporter: not at this point. i was out at that neighborhood yesterday. they were very careful as they approached one particular house in the neighborhood about five miles away from the temple itself. what we were seeing was neighbors were evacuated from their homes that were nearby that particular house. residents in streets adjoining that area were told to stay in their homes. we saw a tremendous law enforcement presence there, federal, state and local authorities there. they were approaching that house very cautiously, some with weapons drawn pointed at that house, suggesting that at the time they didn't know if there might be other people in that residence as well. we're hoping to find out more later this morning about what they may have found adds they got closer to that house, john. >> david mattingly in oak creek, thanks very much. john, for how horrific this

was, witnesses say the tragedy could have been a lot worse if the shooter had shown up 30 minutes later. gunshots rang out 10:30 a.m. yesterday morning. temple members say half an hour later very large crowds would have started showing up for services and meals. still lives have been shattered and for some innocence has forever been lost. >> at a place that you go to find peace and to find god, of all places. >> i just thought it was the safest place maybe on earth or in oak creek. apparently not. i just want people to know that they shouldn't be mistaken by us because we have turbines and long beards too. in the next hour of "early start," we'll be join by the niece and nephew of the temple

president. at pocono raceway, the 160-lap event had to be called on lap 98 when a storm moved in. a race track spokesperson says 12 minutes after jeff gordon was declared the winning, a lightning bolt struck and killed a 41-year-old man and injuring nine others. public address announcements were made at the race for fans to take shelter and evacuate the grandstands. >> we're tracking those storms that cause sod much heart aek. plus ernesto. karen maginnis, you have a busy day here. >> certainly is. yesterday 85,000 people packing the raceway. they were alerted that there were storms in the area. lightning was the thing that

this particular cell points out. lots of lightning associated with this. as we heard, about ten people were struck by lightning, one fatality. so far this year this is the 19th death reported from lightning so far this year. now, that frontal system tracking off towards the eastern seaboard. employeer, drier, calmer weather conditions. however, we looked down towards the caribbean. our tropical storm, ernesto not looking all that impressive on the satellite imagery. as it treks its way towards the west, it will pick up strength. right now 50-mile-per-hour winds associated with it. the national hurricane center says we could see it approach hurricane intensity right before making landfall perhaps in the next couple of days. it is expected to move across the yucatan peninsula and lie low across the gulf of mexico and perhaps weaken once again to tropical storm intensity.

we'll continue to monitor that. we'll monitor florence as well as the heat expected to engulf a good portion of the central u.s. i've been a nascar fan for a long time, karen -- races are called all the time for weather, but i don't remember there ever being a tragedy like we saw at pocono. >> these were very fierce storms as this system roared through. we watched these storms make their way across the northeast and new england. we had reports of people saying it seemed as if the lightning was right where they were standing. with 85,000 people there, it could have been much, much worse. >> karen, thank you so much. and this just in. gas prices are now up a little bit, up to $3.62 for unloaded. prices have increased eight days in a row. >> that is a bummer. aiming for gold this morning, jamaica's usain bolt is back.

pasadena at the jet propulsion lab. to land curiosity, nasa used a parachute method that they weren't even able to test. i find this funny because they call this the seven minutes of terror, quote. is this the hardest part of the mission or are we expecting other potential pitfalls here? >> reporter: always potential pitfalls, brianna. the bottom line is, without question, that seven minutes of terror. they never attempted this kind of landing before. the vehicle, you can see a model behind me here is so big at 2,000 pounds, the size of a small car, they couldn't use the other methods they had done in the past, the tried and true methods, air bags opening, bouncing on the planet and deflating and these rovers coming out. this was just too big to do that. they had to go to this method where they would fly through the atmosphere, a parachute would

deploy. then they would fire rockets, stabilize the vehicle, then a sky crane literally with tethers lowering the vehicle to the ground, everything had to work perfectly if any one thing went wrong, the mission would be lost. you heard that sound. they were all cheering and celebrating. it went just fabulously. shortly after the entire edl team, entry, descent and landing team, they left mission control, they marched across this campus here and from here they made their way over to where nasa was holding the news briefing, and at that point they kind of interrupted it all. john hole dren who is president obama's science adviser said that this was a great day for america. >> and now they're breathing this sigh of relief -- >> if anybody has been harboring

we have new developments in the sikh temple massacre. right now investigators are searching the milwaukee home of the man who opened fire on members of the temple yesterday. seven people are now dead including the gunman. a law enforcement tells cnn the shooter may have been an army veteran and white supremacist. witnesses describe him as a white male in his 40s. he may have had a 9/11 tattoo. heavy shelling reported in a fierce battle for syria's largest city this morning. syrian rebels claim 124 people were killed just yesterday as government forces launched heavy shelling attacks in aleppo. state tv also reported an explosion at a tv building in damascus. no word word on the cause of death for the son of philadelphia eagles coach andy reid. police say 29-year-old garrett reid was found dead in his room yesterday morning at lehigh

university. they don't suspect foul play. this young man battled drug abuse for many years. he went to prison in 2007 after a high-speed crash when cops found heroin and more than 200 pills in his car. less than four hours to the kickoff of the bullying prevention summit in washington, d.c. this is a big priority for the department of education. they're hosting this. corporations, researchers, parents, students are focusing on coordinating anti-bullying efforts with school set to resume in just a few weeks. keynote speakers will include lady gaga's mother. it is just about 19 minutes after the hour. we're getting an early read on local news making national headlines. our first headline from the "atlanta journal constitution" about chicken. why should you care about this? because americans eat about 80 pounds of chicken each a year,

that's each of us. in a new government proposal, it's going to change the way inspections are done at these plants. among other things, they are proposing reducing the number of federal inspectors, replacing them with people who actually work at the chicken factories. in some cases it can reduce the number of inspectors from four to one. the federal inspectors. this could save about $90 million over three years for the federal government. it could save over $276 million for the chicken producers. these proposals are floated to see how the public will react. i'm not sure the public will react all that way to this. the early read we have of "the new york times" has to do with schools across the u.s. they're cutting summer vacation short, some of them, because as you know a lot of schools have taken away days during budget cuts. this is focusing on schools

we're "minding your business" this morning. let's check in on the markets. u.s. stock futures for the dow, nasdaq and s&p 500 are trading higher ahead of the opening bell. alison kosik is in for christine romans. what i've been hearing this week, choppy. >> choppy meaning you'll see markets bouncing around. there aren't a lot of traders out there. it's summertime. people actually take vacation. the wildcard is going to be europe. any headline coming out of

europe, that can be a market mover. the s&p 500 is up 9% this year. that's things to track because that's what your 401(k)s tip quli track. the dow sit sitting over the 13,000 mark. you have to ask what is moving these markets higher. it's speculation the fed will take some sort of action to stimulate the economy, to give the economy a boost. that would help give markets a boost as well. it's not fundamentals even though we got a good jobs report on friday. it showed 160,000 jobs were added to the economy in july. that's a good start. the reality is we need to see 300,000 to 400,000 jobs added month after month after month. the momentum dropped off during the months of april through june. you have to see the job additions gain momentum to make an impact on the unemployment rate. >> if you go to the gas station, you're seeing gas prices tick up. that's tough on a ton of americans. >> it's bad timing. this is kind of a punch to the gut, especially after three

months of seeing these gas prices fall. july had seen some of the highest average prices ever recorded. the latest reading for the national average is at $3.62 for unlead unleaded. prices have increased eight days in a row. that's because oil prices are higher. also there's a fear premium on oil, tensions with iran that are on going, new sanctions on iran. we're seeing this impact the price of oil. oil on friday jumped 4% to over $91 a barrel. what's the track that oil is going to take? this month it's expected you'll see gas prices stay mainly flat to slightly higher. in september you should see prices fall off after labor day because the summer driving season winds down, demand drops and refineries switch to cheaper blends. this uptick we're seeing in gas prices, it's certainly going to be a big factor in the elections, don't you think? >> sure. huge issue. a lot of times it matters what is it in october? >> if it's not a spike -- if

been a white supremacist. personal for the president. a new ebook detailing how president obama feels about his republican opinion pont. record breaker usain bolt lives up to his name in a dramatic 100-meter race. welcome back to "early start." i'm brianna keilar in for zoraida sambolin. >> we have new information about the gunman who opened fire at a sikh temple in suburban milwaukee killing six people before police shot and killed him. this morning fbi investigators are at the shooter's home looking for clues. we don't have his name yet. but a law enforcement source now tells cnn he may be an army veteran and white supremacist. police say he walked into the temple and began firing. the first officer responding is in critical condition but expected to survive. david mattingly joins us live from oak creek, wisconsin. we hear he had a tattoo

commemorating 9/11. are police commenting on that? >> reporter: they are not commenting specifically about that tattoo. a lot of attention is being paid to what the witnesses are saying describing this man as agatha 9/11 tattoo. as of late yesterday, authorities were not going to speculate as to exactly what happened here. but one local official did tell us that there was a certain way that they were approaching this investigation as a case of domestic terrorism. listen. >> we're treating this as a domestic terrorist-type incident. therefore, the fbi has the resources needed to help investigate that. >> reporter: so that's about all the insight we're getting as to how they are approaching this case. but so far no one confirming actually what the motive in this violent shooting may have been. but again, a law enforcement source telling cnn this morning the suspect was an army veteran and may have been a white

supremacist. so that, again, one step closer to that possibility that this could have been a case of domestic tear richl. again, nothing official as of yet. >> david, it really does appear as if the authorities are moving with a great deal of deliberate caution. i think overnight at their house, at the suspect's alleged house you saw some evidence of that, too. >> that's right. they were being very cautious. there was a lot of resources brought to bear into one particular neighborhood about five miles away from the temple. they approached this. there were federal authorities there in full s.w.a.t. team gear. they were being very careful. weapons drawn as they approached the house, approaching it, apparently believing -- as if there might still be someone inside that house. very cautious at the time. they did eventually last night gain entry. they exited the bilgd carrying what looked like large boxes. this morning they still have the house lit up with lights

suggesting that that investigation at that site will continue later this morning. but that same source that was telling us that the suspect here was an army veteran and had been possibly a white supremacist is also telling us that the identity of that alleged gunman will probably be revealed publicly sometime this morning as well. >> more developments expected. david mattingly in oak creek, wisconsin, thanks very much. a who tifk screen. witnesses to the massacre said if the shooter showed up minutes later, this could have been a whole lot worse. gunshots rang out yesterday at 10:30 in the morning. temple members say very large crowds would have started showing up for services and meals beginning at 11:00. >> the main function starts at 11:00. people start pouring in at 11:00 and it's done by 1:00. most of the people are in by 12:00. if that had happened at 12, it would have been very different. >> who would do these kind of

things? and at some point you question where can you really feel safe. the new york city police department is beefing up security around sikh temples here in the sit tirks even deploying critical response vehicles. there are no known threats against any of these temples. officials say they're just doing it as a precaution. we'll be joined by the kalekas, the niece and nephew of temple president and shooting vic kim kanwardeep sal leka. "the l.a. times" and "wall street journal" are reporting jared lee loughner, a competency hearing will be a change of plea hearing. the u.s. attorney's office won't confirm or deny these reports. the shooting killed six people and wounding 16 others, including congresswoman gabrielle giffords. a suicidal person who made

threats is in custody. investigators have been conducting sweeps in a refinery and have not found any public safety issues. part of highway 6 and 50 was closed for a while, but it has reopened. wildfires still burning in parts of oklahoma this morning. this is a monster blaze between manford and kellyville that has burned almost 91 square miles. the flames were so intense on friday, three firefighters had to be treated for burns. many families who were forced to evacuate their homes are now being allowed to return. light rain and cooler tell temperatures are helping the firefighters. for dozens of oak home ans, the damage is already done. >> we have our lives which that's the most important. but as in clothes, dishes, anything, we have nothing left. >> here is the good news, aside from those injured firefighters,

no reports of serious injuries from any of the 18 fires reported statewide. fires, lightning strikes, tropical storms, a very busy day. let's check in now with karen maginnis who is in for rob marciano in the weather center. what are you seeing there? >> they are say there's so many fires across the state of oklahoma, there are almost too many to count. as you mentioned, major fires in some areas. one of them, 38,000 acres being reported. it has been so exceptionally hot, exceptionally dry and now the wind is continuing to blow. however, the levels for the fire advisories or the heat advisories has diminished, but nonetheless is still going to be fairly hot across oklahoma city. not just there, look at fort smith, readings mostly in the hundreds there as well. springfield, readings in the nineties. for wichita, triple digits

expected there as well. last week our drought monitor said about 63% of the counties in the united states are at extreme or exceptionally dry. across the dallas-ft. worth area, indices between 100 and 110. ernest toe is chugging its way across the caribbean, expecting the intensify minimally. could temporarily reach hurricane status, move across the yucatan. the guess is it will move across the southern gulf of mexico. we'll keep you updated. on to politics now. the lineup announced for mitt romney's big week in florida. senator john mccain, former secretary of state condoleezza rice and former arkansas governor mike huckabee among the first speakers named for the

republican national convention which will be held in tampa. this list was first reported by the tampa bay times. the keynote speaker and other headliners will be announced closer to the convention at that time end of the month. there will be a spot reserved for the event vp choice. we don't know who that is yet. mitt romney making the case he's the guy to grow the economy. in an interview with cnn chief political analyst gloria borger this weekend, romney reacted to last week's july jobs numbers that showed unemployment ticked up to 8.3% saying another stimulus is not the answer. >> they were told unemployment would stay below 8%. it's not been below 8% since. his approach of just spending money on government programs did not create the jobs that america was looking for. so the idea of doing the same thing again and expecting a different result is famously said, the definition of insanity. the race for the white house

yohan blake had beaten him in the jamaican trials. a characteristically slow start for usain bolt. he hit the 50 meters and hit the turbo button to clock that new olympic record. how fast is that? well, 9.63. that's .05 of a second slower than his world record. but just to put that into context. it's somewhat quicker than a snail, but still slower than a javelin or even a pigeon or even the stadium hawk, the hawk that flies around here catching those pigeons. it's still pretty quick. yohan blake took the silver. america's justin gatlin took the bronze. usain bolt saying it's a step closer to him becoming a legend. i think most of the people in there, in that stadium last night would say he's already pretty much there. there was quite a sensational

roar, easily matched the support on is it night for the home favorites, ennis and federer. >> usain bolt is half as fast as a pigeon. this is the thing i was watching yesterday. everyone loves a hometown hero making good. andy murray won the gold. i imagine there was a ton of celebrating going on over there. >> reporter: after the heartbreak of wimbledon, the grand slam final just four weeks ago, andy murray got a chance to exact a little bit of revenge on roger federer. he did it pretty well, a straight set victory over the former world number one. it's the first time murray has ever beaten federer in a five-set match on the new look center court, bedecked with all the olympic finery and the bright pink banners, very different than the normal wimbledon traditions that we're so used to seeing.

white male in his 40s with a 9/11 tattoo. curiosity has landed on mars. you're looking at the first photos from the expedition. very cool. we'll be getting more, of course. the rover's mission is to find out whether life has ever exited on the red planet and if it could sustain life in the future. scientists say it's the most important space mission in over a decade. s.w.a.t. teams surrounding a building in california. two workers at a sporting goods store in sacramento were held captive for four hours by an armed suspect yesterday. police say the man tried to rob the store, but a manager was able to call 911. the suspect fired a gunshot into the air, but no one was reported injured luckily. he eventually surrendered to police. at least 15 egyptian soldiers were killed and nine others wounded after masked attackers struck an army check point close to gaza in israel. it happened as the soldiers were

more about the gunman and what may have motivated him to fire. >> it is now 6:00 a.m. in the east and we're finding out more this morning about a possible motive in that deadly shooting spree at the sikh temple. the latest victim confirmed, temple leading when he tried to tackle the gunman and save others. law enforcement officials spent the night examining the suspect's home, he was an army veteran who may have been a white supremacist. he walked into the temple where he began firing. first officer responding to the scene was ambushed. here's what it sounded like on police dispatch. >> subject down! officers down! bring the ambulance. go ahead.

we have one officer shot. >> david mattingly joins us live in oak creek. 40-year-old white male, may have been this 9/11 tattoo on his arm. what else are police saying? >> here's exactly what we know this morning. according to people at the temple at the time of the shooting that describe this man around 40 years of age, bald, white male wearing a white t-shirt and black pants and 9/11 tattoo. they aren't speculating about the motive but say they are approaching this case in a certain way that implies there may have been some kind of agenda. >> we're treating this as a domestic terrorist type incident. and therefore the fbi as the resources needed to help investigate that. >> reporter: as they are pursuing this as a possible domestic terrorism case, that would imply there was some kind

of political motivation here. but as of right now, the fbi not ready to talk about at all what the motivation may have been. the people at the temple at the time not saying whether or not the shooting had anything to say while he was there. police officers not reporting when their confrontation with him, if he had anything to say. but again, a single law enforcement source this morning telling cnn that this suspect was an army veteran and may have been a white supremacist. so again, we're still one step closer to that possibility of domestic terrorism here but no clear answers about why this happened and why here and why now. >> overnight we saw police raid a residence that they believe belongs to the suspect and appeared to be doing it with great delicacy. explain. >> reporter: right, i was there until late last night, it was a tense situation, they evacuated the houses immediately around

the house they were searching. they approached it very cautiously with weapons drawn. they actually went up in a fire department crane at one point to get a different vantage point from high above. but they were very cautious they were approaching this house. they did gain entry and seemed to be approaching it as if someone might still be inside. but they did gain entry into that place. when they came out they were carrying large boxes. they left spotlights on the building and it was still lit up suggesting that they weren't finished and what they were looking for inside that building. but we're expecting to find out that source that was telling us that the suspect was in fact in the past possibly a white supremacist, also telling us maybe later this morning they will be able to release his identity to us. >> david mattingly on the developments in wisconsin this morning. >> witnesses say the tragedy could have been a lot worse if the shooter had shown up 30 minutes later.

gunshots rang out at 10:30. and half hour later very large crowds would have shown up for services and meals. still, lives have been shattered and for some innocence has been forever lost. >> at a place you go to find peace and find god, of all places. >> i thought it was the safest place maybe on earth. we're in oak creek, apparently not. i just want people to know that they shouldn't be mistaken by us. and because we have turbans and long beards too and that's our religion and it's very peaceful. >> in the next half hour, we'll be joined by simran kaleka, the neef of the shooting victim. a deadly lightning strike killed a racing front at the pennsylvania sprint cup race. the 160 happy vent had to be

called on lap 98. 12 minutes after jeff gordon was declared a winner, a lightning bolt struck in the parking lot, killing a 49-year-old and injuring nine others. one in critical condition. public address announcements were made before the storm and at the end of the race for fans to take shelter and evacuate the grandstands. we're also tracking storms that caused so much heart ache and snarled air traffic. you have tropical storm ernesto. >> yesterday this fierce line of storms moved across the northeast, a little bit of heat relief, not much though. this is the line of storms associated with that cold front that moved through. we've circled the area. you can see the lightning strikes dotting all around that race track. there were 85,000 people at the race track there.

ten struck by lightning and so far this year, that particular fatality marks the 19th lightning fatality in the united states. well, a clearer day as that frontal system sweeps off towards the eastern seaboard. now we're focusing in on the tropics with tropical storm ernesto, kind of chugging along. it slowed down and hasn't picked up any intensity and still hoeding at 50 miles per hour. it is expected sometime wednesday to make it across the yucatan peninsula and into the southern gulf of mexico. we think it may briefly reach hurricane intensity but we'll keep you updated on that. >> thanks, karen, we'll see you later. usain bolt is back in a flash. the world held its collective breath as the fastest group of 100 meter sprinters ever hit the olympic blocks.

the space rover landed on mars and we have the first images from curiosity of the red planet. this mission will find out once and for all if life was ever possible on mars. and if it could sustain life in the future. with all of the answers to those questions, i'm sure, cnn's john zarrella is at the jet propulsion lab. what is the meaning of life? i'm kidding. they were able to get curiosity through this so-called -- calling it the seven minutes of terror. they were unable to test this method that they got the rover down to this crater in. >> no, and you know what's funny, not that long ago i talked to one of the chief scientists here, engineers, who was involved in this whole process of getting it down to the surface. and he said, you know what, we're going to land between a rock and a hard place. they were going to be right between the crater wall and

mount sharp on one side. and what you're seeing there, is that entire time of edl, entry, descent and landing, racing across the courtyard, going to the auditorium where the news conference was being held, just so much joy and jubilation because there were a lot of skeptics who didn't think they would be able to pull it off. the man who heads the jet propulsion laboratory out here said, you know what, this is just the beginning. >> and tonight we just did the landing. tomorrow we're going to start exploring mars. and next week and next month and next year we'll be bringing new discovery every day every week to all of you. and we're going to continue not only exploring mars but exploring the solar system and exploring the universe because our curiosity has no limit. >> again, they land it between a

higher. that's good news ahead of the opening bell. an alison kosik is in nor christine romans. it is going to be choppy? >> the stocks will bounce around a lot. not a lot for investors to trade on as far as new reports and also not a lot of traders are in the mix. a lot of people are on vacation and stocks move quickly at any gefrn time. any headline out of europe, that's the wild card miss and could be the market driver over the komting week. before the opening bell rings, the s&p 500 is up 9% this year. that's good news if you have a 401(k), basically tracks the s&p 500. the dow is starting above $13,000, that's good news. but the question is what is moving the markets higher? it is not the fundamentals of the economy, although 163 jobs added on friday, that was a good start. the reality is we need to see from 300 to 400,000 jobs added

per month. you're seeing there how the jobs recovery had really lost momentum between april through june. what is moving stocks higher? there's speculation that the fed could go ahead and step in and introduce some sort of stimulus into the economy to give that kind of rered bull jolt to stocks and economy as well. >> one of the things i was noticing with gas, you're seeing prices go up and this doesn't help when already things are fragile. >> the timing couldn't be worse, after we've seen them kind of come down over the past three months, july actually saw some of the highest average prices ever recorded. so what -- let's look at today's average price sitting at $3.62 a gallon for unleaded. prices have gone up eight days in a row. oil prices are higher, oil prices factor hugely into the gas price. right now there's a fear premium on oil. tensions with iran are heating up. there are new sanctions on iran.

by witnesses as a white male wearing a white t-shirt and having a tattoo that commemorated 9/11. searching a house six miles from the temple that is believed to be the rented home of the suspected gunman. the chief of police saying because of the nature of the town, the fbi is going to be involved too. >> we're treating this as a domestic terrorist type incident and therefore the fbi has the resources needed to help investigate that. >> one of the heroes on sunday was seen in this facebook photo, the president of the temple, killed when he tried to tackle the gunman and shot in the back. >> the fbi in denver says a suicidal person who made threats against oil and gas sites in western colorado is in custody. investigators have been conducting sweems of a refinery and surrounding area but haven't found any public safety issues. part of highway 6 and 50 was closed for a while but has been

reopened. those wildfires are still burning in parts of oklahoma this morning. a monster blaze between mannford and kelliville has scorched 91 square miles, dozens of homes and buildings have burned to the ground. three firefighters had to be treated for burns. many families were forced to evacuate homes are being allowed to return now. light rain and cooler temperatures helping firefighters make significant gains against the flames yesterday. >> there is a lot of weather news to talk about between thunderstorms, lightning strikes, a hurricane or tropical storm in the gulf. let's get a quick check on the weather with karen maginnis. >> there are so many fires across oklahoma. there are about a dozen to 18 major fires across this region. one fire in particular, 38,000 plus acres and that he had like to say they have control over it. but in fact it is anything

happiest people in the world. and he did so much to create this community and create this temple and help involve those in the community. and from what we understand, he basically fought until the very end and suffered gunshot wounds trying to take down the gunman. he was a protecter of his own people, just incredible individual who showed his love and passion for our people, our faith until the end. >> we understand he was shot while trying to tackle the gunman. truly a hero in this tragic, tragic episode. i understand that in the midst of all of this chaos and tragedy for your family, you were actually on the scene helping police talk to witnesses there and translate for some of them

who do not speak english so well. what do the people inside the temple tell you they saw? >> i mean, you know, there's a lot of commotion so people didn't have the most clear picture. they didn't remember exactly how many gunshots they heard. some of the ladies who were making food in the kitchen overhead gunshots and some of them went down to the basement where their kids were playing to protect their kids. one of the husbands was one of the leaders, religious leaders of the temple. he went to go see what had happened and unfortunately he was also -- killed right on the spot. and just a great man and just came from india three weeks ago. you know, you see a man so happy

to see his kids and his wife and now he doesn't have that. but supposedly the gunman basically came into the parking lot shooting, shot people who were standing out in front and entered the temple and open fired in the opening room. and then went into the religious room where we keep our -- and open fired there. and from what i'm told, killed two more women and i believe three more males. >> this is a holy place -- >> in critical condition. >> this is a holy place, place of peace and place where you open your arms and welcome anyone from the community, whether they are sikhs or not, correct? >> absolutely. any faith, religion or creed, gender, anything. anybody could come into our temple without any judgment and

[ applause ] >> immediately after touching down, curiosity began sending images back to mission control sparking more celebration and more tears from nasa scientists. jim gar vin is the chief scientist from the nasa godard chief space center and served as

chief scientist from 2000 to 2004. could this have gone any better? >> not at all. we are so thrilled. we're all speechless. yay! >> everyone was so excited about this. we loved your enthusiasm, it got us really into it. this is a huge mission, the biggest space mission in a decade. we can't really overstate now. we've seen the celebrating and really hard part, the seven -- terror moment has passed. what is curiosity now going to do? what's in store for us? >> well, curiosity is getting ready to do her job, which is going to be a two-year marathon exploring mars in one of the most exciting places we could find. now it's the slow warming up wake-up, like an olympic averthe warming up for a tumbling

routine or whatever. for us we got the gold olympics getting there. now it's the gravy. >> this the microbial gravy, right? tell us what we're searching for with this. i say we, because i think we want to be a part of it. >> of course, it's the people's mission. what we found is mars was a water planet. and a lot of the water story which links to the possibility of something really cool like life, is buried in the rocks and past, the way we might look for ancient fossils here on earth. we have to become really good geologists, kind of like csi does mars on the rocks. that's the way we're going to look at it with curiosity with the tools we have. this is a new class of mission for. it's apollo without the astronauts doing scientists. >> without the astronauts, but

but thing they are going to do is test radiation levels on mars. obviously we would like to see astronauts on mars one day. what other obstacles may they face in such a mission like this aside from the fact it's 352 million miles away? well, indeed, brianna. the radiation measures are important. we people are not good in that deep space environment. last time we've been there was with a project apollo back in the '70s. we're going to get to know what it was like to move about on mars as explorers. curiosity will not only measure radiation but pave the way in terms of landing the systems we would need on mars. it is first bright step as a science machine, surface observatory to get the way that some day women and men might go to the surface of mars. that grand expedition. >> jim, you make me want to sign up for space camp.

best, 9.7 the seconds. the best part is he's joining us live now from london. justin, 9.7 nine seconds, how did it feel on the track? >> it feels good. the track is amazingly fast. i'm just glad to be a part of history once again and i'm ready to do more damage out there. >> you won the gold in 2004. and then in 2006 you were suspended from racing, you were away from the track for four years. how does it feel to come back after that suspension and medal? >> you know, it was a long road for me, almost half a decade away from the sport. to come back in the last two years and want to do this year and be dominant as possible and show the world that i can be a top runner again and one of the fastest humans alive. >> you are 30 years old, which to a lot of people seems young. but you're an old man in the woshld of racing. how do you get your personal best at age 30?

what makes you so fast this old? >> you know, when i was younger, i ate a lot of burgers and fries and pizza and halfway trained. now i have to be more diligent in what i have to do, eat my vegetables, watch my weight and stay focused on the task at hand, which is going out there and running fast and being strong. i can say i am the fastest oldest man in the world. that's me. >> you are the fast evident oldest man in the world. >> maybe if i layoff the burgers i can catch you. usain bolt looks like he's 12 feet tall, looks like a different type of creature than the rest of us. what is it like to line up in the blocks against someone like that? >> you know, it's not even a feeling you feel in like first part of the race. i can definitely say the last 30 meters of the race you can feel his presence coming on because he is 6'5". and i'm pushing 6 foot, 6'1".

law enforcement officials spent the night searching for the suspected gunman's home. he didn't know -- we don't know his identity yet but a source tells cnn the suspect was an army veteran who may have been a white supremacist. witnesses say he was bald, wearing a white t-shirt and black pants and had a 9/11 tattoo on one arm. the latest victim we have confirmed, the temple leader, shot when he was trying to tackle the victim. six victims dead along with the gunman. david mattingly, what is the latest? >> reporter: well, here's what we know this morning. we have a law enforcement source who is involved in the investigation telling us that the shooter was an army veteran and at one time it was believed to be a white supremacist. we know the witnesses at the temple describe him as a white male, bald, wearing a t-shirt,

dark pants with april tattoo that says 9/11. all of that together, we have a local law enforcement official saying they were approaching this as a case of domestic terrorism. now late into the night last night, about 5 miles from here, they were searching a house believed to be the home of the shooter. they were approaching it cautiously. i was out there until very late last night watching this going on. the evacuated the houses nearby, the house they were shooting -- that they were going into. they were also getting the people in nearby streets to stay in their homes. they approached this very cautiously as if there still might be someone in that particular house. but they did gain entry and they were seen coming out carrying large boxes, what was in those boxes, we do not know. as far as a possible motive, there are no answers yet about why this happened and why here and why now but the point has been made
